Their music can be labeled anything from baroque pop to indie rock. But in any case, an apt description is Artrock - because what Arcade Fire have been producing since their groundbreaking debut album "Funeral" is pure art. Supported by virtuoso permanent band members and live musicians, the husband-and-wife duo Win Butler and Régine Chassagne enrich the music world with their experimental and original sounds. From classics of the band's history, such as "Wake Up" or "The Suburbs" to more recent songs, such as "Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)" and "The Lightning I, II" from the 2022 album "WE" - Arcade Fire know how to inspire their numerous followers again and again.
Win Butler meets his future spouse in Montreal in 2002. He had previously left Texas to look elsewhere for potential band members. As a multi-instrumentalist and singer, Régine Chassagne is the perfect candidate. She, too, was not born in Canada: Her parents fled Haiti with her to escape the Duvalier dictatorship. The search for other band members is successful. One of them is Win's brother William Butler, who in the meantime, however, has to return to the USA to finish school. In 2003 Arcade Fire release their self-titled debut EP. 2004 (in Germany 2005) follows the first full-length album "Funeral", which various sources later choose as the best album of the decade. The work combines elements of folk, pop, rock and classical music into something epic that music fans have not heard before in this way.
Arcade Fire from "Neon Bible" to "WE"
On their following albums - from "Neon Bible" (2007) and "The Suburbs" (2010) to "Reflektor" (2013) and "Everything Now" (2017) to "WE" (2022, the last one with William Butler) - Arcade Fire continue the path of highly independent indie music they took back then. Not only diverse styles find a place, but also for pop and rock music rather untypical instruments such as accordion, violin, xylophone and various wind instruments. The fact that even a legend like David Bowie bowed down to Arcade Fire at the time speaks volumes. The Canadians have been playing in their own league from the very beginning. And even after about two decades, they still know how to surprise: With the soundtrack to "HER," the band proves together with Owen Pallett that they can easily compose film music as well. A first hint of this was already provided in 2012 by the song "Abraham's Daughter" from "The Tribute of Panem - The Hunger Games".
Their impressive collection of illustrious music awards, including a Grammy for "The Suburbs", proves: Arcade Fire is a band like no other. This is also and especially true for their thrilling live shows, which are an unforgettable acoustic and visual experience for the audience. Whether on record or live on stage - Arcade Fire are and remain simply incomparable.
