There is a certain kind of songwriter who writes out of an inner need, without thinking about a career. Damien Rice has always been one of them. To mark the 25th anniversary of his debut album “O,” he will perform on April 6, 2027, at THE HALL in Zurich.
After turning down a record deal, he tried his hand at farming in Tuscany and traveled through Europe as a street musician. In 1999, he returned to Ireland with little more than his songs.
His debut album “O” was written, recorded, and produced at home—financed by a loan from his father, which didn’t have to be repaid once the album was finished. He received support in the form of equipment and encouragement from his second cousin, the composer David Arnold. When it was released on his own label in February 2002, he initially thought it would remain the only record he would ever make.
Twenty-five years later—marked by tours, periods of silence, and the surreal, rapid passage of time—the songs from “O” have never left him. Now he returns to the place where it all began. To mark the 25th anniversary of “O,” he’ll perform in 25 cities for the audience that has gathered around the music over the years, as well as for a new audience drawn to its timelessness. That’s exactly why he’s coming to Switzerland, where he’ll perform on April 6, 2027, at THE HALL in Zurich.
With his confessional songwriting and minimalist sound, he shaped a wave of introspective singer-songwriters in the 2000s. To this day, his work is considered the benchmark for anyone drawn to raw, unfiltered music.
Live, he has earned a reputation for not just performing a song, but for living it anew each time—which is probably why, despite long breaks between albums, people are still eager to see what he’ll do next.
