Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band are among the most successful representatives of the Schlager revival that emerged in the 1990s. Since 1994 they have been performing successfully with their entertaining interpretations of the best-known and most popular German Schlager.
Dieter Thomas Kuhn was born in Tübingen in 1965. He has loved German Schlager since he was a small child. He listens to the songs from the 1970s in particular. When he was around 30, he finally began to sing himself. Kuhn deliberately uses exaggeration in his languorous Schlager lyrics.
His trademark is always a golden or brightly coloured suit in the style of the 1970s, worn with a smart pair of platform shoes. His trademarks also include a chest hair toupee, a blow-dry wavy hairstyle and a sunflower. Fans affectionately nickname the pop singer "The Singing Blowdryer Wave".
Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band: From small clubs to the big stage
At their first concerts, Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band start playing the greatest hits from Kuhn's childhood. First in small clubs, then they also perform on large open-air stages in front of 15,000 clapping and cheering spectators. Only three years after their debut in 1994, Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band win the German Record Prize and a little later even an Echo.
In 1995 and 1996 Dieter Thomas Kuhn also tries his hand at acting. The films "Georgia" and "Der Trip - Die nackte Gitarre", in which Kuhn plays the main roles together with Esther Schweins, celebrate only moderate success, however.
Shortly before the turn of the century, Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band announce their retirement from the pop circus. For this purpose, there is a special exhibition with the meaningful title "Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band - DankeFöhn" in the city museum of Kuhn's hometown Tübingen.
Comeback with sold-out shows
The abstinence of Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band does not last long. After interim attempts to gain a foothold in German pop, Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band return to the Schlager stage in 2004: the tickets for the comeback show in Hamburg's Markthalle and the seven further concerts are completely sold out within a few hours.
In the same year, Kuhn releases an album with his favourite Christmas songs for his fans. Then Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band start working on a new hit album. "Einmal um die ganze Welt" (2006) makes it to the top of the German longplayer charts like its predecessors. A short time later, Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band embark on a tour with numerous shows.
The success of Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band continues under a new label
The singer-songwriter and his band then switch to a new label ("VEP - Vaddi's own record company") and release the album "Musik ist Trumpf", which immediately enters the German album charts at number 31. On the following tours Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band get their fans singing along and swaying again.
To the delight of the fans, a recording of Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band's tour for the album "Schalala" is released in 2009. The concert in Berlin's Waldbühne marks the highlight of Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band's live shows.
As a self-confessed football fan, Dieter Thomas Kuhn sponsors the football club of his hometown Tübingen. Together with the TSG Tübingen team, Kuhn even made a music video for Franz Beckenbauer's football classic "Gute Freunde kann niemand trennen".
