LaBrassBanda
LaBrassBanda is a brass band from Übersee am Chiemsee that has existed since 2007 and sings in Bavarian dialect. The band members can regularly be seen on stage in lederhosen and with bare feet. The music of LaBrassBanda belongs to the genre of new folk music. The group themselves describe their songs as Bavarian gypsy brass, funk brass or alpine jazz techno.
The name LaBrassBanda is a portmanteau of the Italian and the English term for "Brass music band": "la banda" and "brass band". Since 2007, LaBrassBanda has been merging modern and folksy sounds and lyrics into a charming mix - dancing, singing and swaying along is a must at live concerts. The band itself says: "For us it's just the music that wants to get out of us."
The band currently consists of the following members:
- Stefan Dettl (trumpet, vocals)
- Stefan Huber (tuba)
- Manuel Winbeck (trombone, vocals)
- Manuel da Coll (drums, vocals )
- Jörg Hartl (trumpet)
- Korbinian Weber (trumpet)
- Fabian Jungreithmayr (bass)
LaBrassBanda: Inspired by New York brass bands
The idea for LaBrassBanda came from singer Stefan Dettl, who received trumpet lessons at the age of eleven. His travels as a solo and orchestral musician take him to New York. Once there, he is enthusiastic about groups like the Youngblood Brass Band, which mix traditional brass music with hip-hop, funk or jazz.
While studying music at the Richard Strauss Conservatory Dettl met Andreas Hofmeir, Oliver Wrage, Manuel Winbeck and Manuel da Coll and founded the group LaBrassBanda with them in 2007. Just one year later, the boys were able to draw attention to themselves with an unusual campaign.
LaBrassBanda: With a tractor and trumpets on the fan mile
2008 saw the band better known during the European Football Championship. From their home in Bavaria, LaBrassBanda embark on a tour to the final in Vienna, Austria. The musicians make their way to the Austrian capital with a vintage tractor with a trailer and some mopeds. On their journey, LaBrassBanda stop at fan miles to play impromptu shows.
In 2009 the band will perform in Russia and at the Harare International Festival of Arts in Zimbabwe. In the same year, the LaBrassBanda shows at Circus Krone in Munich are sold out three times in a row. In addition, appearances at major festivals such as "Roskilde", "Hurricane", "Southside", the "Highfield" in Großpösna, the "Sziget" in Budapest, "Haldern Pop" on the Lower Rhine and the "Chiemsee Reggae Summer".
More than 700 concerts in eight years
Between 2007 and 2015 LaBrassBanda play over 700 concerts. In 2011 they even performed four times in the USA at the invitation of the German embassy. In the same year there is a big conclusion to their "Overseas" tour: LaBrassBanda are able to sell around 12,000 tickets for the Olympiahalle in Munich. After that, the members devote themselves to other projects.
In 2013, the band almost succeeded in representing Germany at the "Eurovision Song Contest". But in the preliminary round, LaBrassBanda and their wind instruments - according to their own statements "less than 100 euros, but over 100 years old" - came second. The group won the radio listener's voting and took second place among the television viewers. However, the jury only gives the boys one point.
With Bavarian brass music on a world tour
The band can get over that, because their success proves them right. In 2017, LaBrassBanda will be traveling around the world: during their six-week tour, the wind musicians will perform in Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Sydney, Honolulu, Mexico City and Marrakech. The album "Around the World" is released to go with it.
Who would have thought that Bavarian lyrics and the sound of trumpet, tuba and trombone would make people all over the world freak out? If you want to see the cannons live, you should get a ticket for the next tour in good time.
