Four years after their last concert in Switzerland, the pagan/melodic death metal band Varg returns to Z7 for an exclusive show—with a new studio album and the most elaborate live production of their career. Varg last visited us in November 2023 with their legendary Wolfsfest. This was followed by a long hiatus from live shows for their Swiss fans. But a show by the successful pagan pack is finally scheduled again for spring 2027. And the musicians aren’t coming back to Pratteln empty-handed—their eighth studio album will be released before the tour kicks off. The band was founded in 2005 in Coburg, Bavaria. The name “Varg” comes from Old Norse and means “wolf.” Stylistically, the wolves blend elements of pagan, Viking, black, and melodic death metal. The band itself aptly describes its style as “Wolf Metal.” Themes such as Norse mythology, a connection to folklore and nature, and unity run through their music. After more than twenty years together, touring throughout Europe and North America, and playing numerous shows at Europe’s biggest festivals—such as Wacken Open Air, Party.San, and Metalfest—Varg are undoubtedly at the forefront of the pagan metal scene. And even after all this time, Freki (vocals), Fylgja (vocals), Morkai (guitar), and the most recent additions, Ulvar (guitar, bass) and Rohgarr (drums), still manage to surprise their fans. In May 2026, the band’s very first live album will be released. Asenblut will bring extra Viking metal power to Z7 as special guests. The band from Göttingen is coming to Pratteln with their brand-new album “Urgewalt,” which is currently storming the German album charts.
