Lucca Kleimann on the musical "Berlin Berlin": the golden 1920s staged on stage

21/02/2025 written by Letizia

Berlin Berlin" brings the dazzling Berlin of the 1920s back to life. The show transports the audience into a world full of glamor, uninhibited joie de vivre and timeless classics.

Between Charleston, Lindy Hop and melodies such as "Puttin' on the Ritz", "Mackie Messer" and "Bei mir bist du schön", the lifestyle of the Roaring Twenties unfolds. In the musical "Berlin Berlin", a charismatic emcee guides you through the show, in which Marlene Dietrich, the Comedian Harmonists and Josephine Baker invite you to a roaring dance on the volcano.

Why should you go and see "Berlin Berlin"? What makes this musical special (for you)?
Lucca Kleimann: The current political situation is partly reminiscent of the Weimar Republic and the developments back then are reflected in social trends today. I think it's important that we in the art scene draw attention to these worrying developments. Against this political background, I am fascinated by the gripping music of the 20s and 30s, great dances and beautiful melodies. "Berlin Berlin" offers fast-paced, witty entertainment and depth of content.

What role do you play in the play?
Lucca Kleimann : This is my fourth season in "Berlin Berlin". This year I have a new position. I'm "Swing" for the Comedian Harmonists and the cover for Kutte, a cheeky Berlin boy. A swing is available for several positions backstage and fills in if someone can't be on stage that day. So I play everything from a drag queen to the Comedian Harmonist to a Nazi in this show.

Is there a scene or a song that particularly touches you emotionally?
Lucca Kleimann : The song "Irgendwo auf der Welt gibt's ein kleines bisschen Glück" comes at a very emotionally charged point in the play. The song, which we perform "a capella", makes me emotional and thoughtful every time.

What inspired you to become a musical performer?
Lucca Kleimann : I came to my vocation very late. After graduating from high school, I originally wanted to study social work. That's why I was looking for an internship to gain work experience. I found one in the office of the VoiceSteps musical school in Cham. The requirement was to also play a part in the company's projects. I was enthusiastic about telling stories through singing. And so my social work studies took a back seat. In the end, I started a four-year bachelor's degree at the Music and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna and graduated in 2020. The start to my professional life was not easy due to the pandemic. But I can now happily say that I can make a good living as a performer.

Is there a particular message in "Berlin Berlin" that you would also like to spread in real life?
Lucca Kleimann : Everyone is welcome in our "Admiralspalast" (the Admiralspalast is a traditional venue in Berlin's Friedrichstrasse and was a symbol of the roaring times of the 1920s with its opulent revues, editor's note). Even if they don't "fit in" with the usual social conventions. Whether woman, man, drag - whether black or white, everyone is welcome. What I also do not tolerate is hatred and hate speech. And I think we should keep it exactly the same in a peaceful society.
