Last night was the day: one of this year's musical highlights celebrated its premiere and the air crackled with anticipation. The Bodyguard is not just a classic movie, but a cultural phenomenon whose songs have been with us for decades. The audience in the auditorium was full of excited anticipation and reminiscing - the movie has clearly left its mark.
And then, the curtain went up and we were immediately in the middle of the action! The start was literally a bang, shaking the entire theater awake and catapulting the audience straight into the action-packed world of superstar Rachel Marron. It was immediately clear: this was going to be a rousing evening! However, the play doesn't just deliver action, but above all what makes a great musical: deep emotions.
A large part of this is, of course, due to lead actress Sidonie Smith as Rachel Marron, who exceeds all expectations in the iconic leading role. She not only sings, she lives the role. Her performance was the emotional anchor of the evening: she conveyed so many emotions that the audience could directly sympathize with her and rejoice with her. You could feel the star's inner turmoil as she searched for protection.
But despite all the hustle and bustle and danger, there were also light-hearted moments that stood out as a particular contrast. For example, the intimate scene at the karaoke evening between Rachel and her bodyguard. A touch of normality in a glamorous world that took the audience's hearts by storm - one of the most beautiful moments of the entire musical.
Although the movie is so glamorous, the production showed clever restraint. The stage elements were deliberately combined and used discreetly but very cleverly. The stage design was never overloaded. Instead, the smart combination of elements and, above all, the energy of the outstanding ensemble ensured that the audience was completely immersed in the world of the star and his protector. Of course, the mega hits such as «One Moment In Time», «I'm Every Woman» and «I Will Always Love You» by Whitney Houston also contributed to the captivating atmosphere.
In the end, it was clear that the premiere not only met the high expectations, but exceeded them - captivating, iconic, nostalgic.
