A Circus Symphony: A mix of classical music and artistry

12/01/2017 written by Mohan Mani
The concert show "A Circus Symphony" fuses classical music and artistry.

"It has always been a basic human need to move to music, and so every culture has developed its own forms of dance," says artistic show manager and director Kilian Rosenberg. "Acrobatics and artistry are evolved art forms of dance. Every choreography tells its own story, just like every musical work. The great challenge lies in finding the right stories for each other in the music and in the expression of the human body."

Aerial dance on the straps

The concert hall at the KKL Luzern offers space for aerial and stage artistry. This is important, for example, when Katarzyna Jastrzȩbska and Daniel Orszulak meet on stage in their hand-on-hand performance and merge in aerial dance on the straps. Romina Micheletty is completely different, bending and spinning hoops around her waist, arms and legs. In contrast, Martin Wall's balls and diabolos choose the vertical "trajectory".

Installations for the aerial act

The KKL orchestra musicians take their place on the ascending stepped podium and become a sounding backdrop for the artists. They perform in the foreground and are almost close enough to touch thanks to the stage extension that extends into the audience. "The very large stage not only has to accommodate a large symphony orchestra, but also provide space for the artists to perform," explains Rosenberg. "That's why the first rows of seats in the stalls are being built over with a stage extension. The installations for the aerial act require a number of guy wires across the balconies, which means that some seats have to be closed off to the audience. The location does indeed set limits. However, the creativity of the artists is inexhaustible, so new and suitable acts are always being found for this show format."
