Basel Tattoo total: Coming soon on DVD, live again in 2017

05/10/2016 written by Mohan Mani
The DVD with highlights from this year's "Basel Tattoo" military music festival will be released at the end of October. The twelfth edition will take place from July 19 to 29, 2017.

The eleventh Basel Tattoo will be without airplanes, motorcycles and cars. But the basic recipe for the show remains unchanged: Basel Tattoo director Erik Julliard brings interesting and always surprising music formations from all over the world to the old Basel barracks courtyard. And the bands that have already played here before show a new side.

Basel Tattoo: more than 90,000 fans

The DVD revisits the 2016 show: The united bagpipers and drummers walk atmospherically into the arena at the beginning of the show. This year there were 175 musicians, made up of ten formations. A new addition was the combination with dancers from Canada, the Canadian Celtic Highland Dancers. And in a later performance, this young dance group showed steps and moves that had never been seen before at the Basel Tattoo. In short: the Basel Tattoo 2016 thrilled over 90,000 fans, with the Nippon Sport Science University Shudan-kodo Marching Team literally sweeping the audience off their feet with their choreographies.

Formations from all over the world - also next year

Even before the DVD is released at the end of October, the organizers have already announced the first acts for the twelfth edition, which will take place from 19 to 29 July. Already confirmed are the performances of the OzScot Highland Dancers from Australia and His Majesty The King's Guard Band and Drill Team from Norway. The other formations have all been invited, with the Swiss Army Recruit Band also representing local groups. Every year, 240 young musicians benefit from the training provided by the three recruit bands. The trumpeters, tambourines, drummers and company soldiers receive 21 weeks of professional and personal preparation for their roles in Swiss military music. A performance at the Basel Tattoo 2017 included.
