Ennio Morricone: A master of film music live

12/11/2016 written by Mohan Mani
Ennio Morricone presents his most beautiful film melodies on his "The 60 Years of Music Tour".

"I feel deeply honored by all the recognition I have received over the past year," says 88-year-old film composer Ennio Morricone, who is coming to Switzerland again with his "The 60 Years of Music Tour". In the last two years alone, the maestro has already thrilled over 350,000 spectators with his live performances.
His name has long been synonymous not only with film classics such as "Once Upon a Time in America" and "The Untouchables", but also with younger audiences thanks to his soundtracks for Quentin Tarantino's last few films. After an initial collaboration for the slave drama "Django Unchained", "The Hateful Eight" marked Morricone's return to the western genre after forty years. And this very soundtrack was promptly nominated for an Oscar.

Another Tarantino collaboration

Morricone will also provide the soundtrack for Tarantino's ninth, as yet unnamed film, as he revealed to the news portal "Deadline". The doyen also named his conditions: "I told Tarantino that I want to have much more time for the film music in the future. I want to work on this project long before I actually start composing. That way I can think about the music better and discuss what I'm going to score with him at an early stage." Morricone himself never approaches a director to ask for a collaboration. In this case, however, Tarantino simply told him directly that there would be a next collaboration with him.

Far more than a handful of film scores

Ennio Morricone has written over 500 film scores for cinema and television, as well as over 100 independent musical works. His idiosyncratic score for the classic western "Two Magnificent Scoundrels" from 1966 still occupies second place on the list of the 200 best soundtracks of all time.

Morricone was a schoolmate of Sergio Leone, for whom he composed some of his best film scores. He also worked for directors such as John Carpenter, Brian De Palma, Barry Levinson, Mike Nichols and Oliver Stone. His score for Giuseppe Tornatore's cinematic love story "Cinema Paradiso", for whose latest drama "La corrispondenza" he also composed the soundtrack, is also unforgettable.

All the prizes...

"I'm particularly happy about how many people have attended my concerts."

He is excited about the upcoming "The 60 Years of Music Tour" and is already looking forward to performing his music live on stage again: "All the prizes, the praise from colleagues, the time with Quentin Tarantino... I'm particularly happy about how many people have attended my concerts."
