Mary Poppins actor Matt Lee: "I was forbidden to ski"

04/01/2017 written by Michel Imhof
Matt Lee has not only played the male lead in the musical "Mary Poppins" since 2010 with his role as Bert, but has also toured with Britney Spears and was on the jury of the Australian casting show "So You Think You Can Dance".
You are coming to Zurich in February. Have you been here before?

Yes, but only briefly. In 2000, I did the choreography for the Australian band Sister2Sister and was their backing dancer. And we were the opening act for Britney Spears on the Australian dates of her "Oops! I Did It Again World Tour". But I didn't see much of the city.
What do you particularly like about "Mary Poppins"?

The story appeals to children, parents and grandparents. It deals with a turbulent family story. Everyone has probably been through something like that at some point. And: adults can indulge in childhood memories.
When did you see "Mary Poppins" for the first time?

As a child, I always watched the movie after horror films to make me feel good again. And when the musical came to Australia in 2010, I applied for the role of Bert and was accepted.
You've been playing Bert since 2010. How do you keep the work fresh?

It's always exciting to work with new people. I've worked with four different casts and seen how each person performs their role individually. We always have new child actors playing with us. It's important not to fall into a routine.
You are well known in Australia because you were on the jury of "So You Think You Can Dance". Here, however, people don't know you yet. Does that take the pressure off?

I'm starting from scratch here. In Australia, people all had expectations. It's more relaxed, on the other hand I have to convince new people of my worth.
Will you also be skiing during your time in Switzerland?

I'm contractually forbidden to do that. It would be too much of a risk for the production if I broke my leg and couldn't play.
