Supercalifragilisticexpialigetisch! Mary Poppins, the world's most popular nanny, is on her way - and will be making a guest appearance in Zurich for around six weeks.
London, 17 Cherry Tree Lane, 1910: The Banks, an upper middle class family, are desperately looking for a new nanny. The previous nannies simply couldn't cope with the two children, the ruffians Jane and Michael.
So a super nanny is needed. But most of the applicants are either not strong enough or not good enough for the job. Only Mary Poppins can stand up to the children. Her appearance alone is impressive: she flies in on an umbrella. With severity, love and magic, she later opens her protégés' eyes to the world. And that you should take care of your fellow human beings. This also means respecting workers from lower social classes - for example chimney sweeps. In this way, Mary Poppins has touched generations.
Julie Andrews made Mary Poppins famous
Now she is heading for Zurich, where the musical named after her will celebrate its Swiss premiere in February. The play is based on the "Mary Poppins" novels by Australian author P. L. Travers (1899-1996) from the 1930s and on the legendary Disney film adaptation from 1964, in which Julie Andrews (80) won the hearts of cinema-goers as Mary Poppins - as well as an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Actress and a Grammy for Best Recording for Children. This performance - alongside "The Sound of Music" - was to remain Andrew's most impressive.
Astonishingly, the musical version of her story is only twelve years old. It premiered in London's West End in 2004, followed by its premiere on Broadway in New York in 2006. And the stage play also landed in fortune: two Olivier Awards and a Tony Award, including for choreography and stage design. Twelve million fans have seen the play so far.
One reason for its success over the decades is its catchy tunes, especially the popular hit "Supercalifragilisticexpialigetisch". They are strung together with humor, many dance interludes and illusions. Jim Steinmeyer (57), David Copperfield's (59) trick master, is responsible for the latter. Super-Nanny Poppins not only has to fly over the audience with an umbrella, but also pull bulky furniture out of her handbag.
