Mary Poppins: The Supernanny approaches Zurich

26/12/2016 written by Michel Imhof
Ever since the 1964 film version, "Mary Poppins" has been one of the most beautiful children's stories in the world. In the musical version, however, it is not only the magical nanny who becomes the big surprise of the show.

It was Julie Andrews' first major success: the film adaptation of P. L. Travers' story "Mary Poppins". Andrews received an Oscar, a Golden Globe and even a Grammy for Best Picture for her portrayal of the magical nanny. Forty years later, in 2004, the musical version of the story celebrated its world premiere in London's West End under the joint direction of Disney and musical producer Cameron Mackintosh.

Since then, the story of the flying super nanny has entertained over twelve million people around the world. Mary Poppins miraculously appears at the Banks family home in London's Cherry Tree Lane. Her job is to tame the spoiled children and put the Banks family back on the right track. To this end, she has her own ways, which are sometimes viewed critically by their father George. She shows the children the London workers, such as an elderly woman who sells birdseed, or the city's chimney sweeps, giving them a different perspective on life.

The children are on stage the longest

In addition to the performance of the 35 adult actors, the performance of the child actors is particularly impressive. They are on stage longer than any other actors, dance along to the scenes and have long dialogs. For this reason, "Mary Poppins" not only has a single director, but also a second one for the children. Jane and Michael Banks are played by a total of ten different children, with two on stage and two backstage for each play.

Now Switzerland is also getting supercalifragilisticexpialigetisch

After the production toured the UK and Ireland, Mary Poppins is now making a stop in Zurich. "Touring productions are usually a bit smaller than the show in London's West End," says company manager Neil White. "But this production is bigger than usual and brings the West End feeling to people who don't live in London. That's extraordinary!"

In Zurich, "Mary Poppins" will be shown in the original English version. There will be many familiar songs from the movie: "A Spoonful of Sugar", "Chim Chim Cher-ee" and of course "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious".

Cameron Mackintosh is constantly modernizing the piece

Cameron Mackintosh, who has produced "Cats", "Les Misérables" and "Phantom of the Opera", among others, is constantly working on his plays. "No production is staged without Mackintosh giving his okay. Everything has to be perfect," says Neil White. "Things are constantly being updated. For example, new lighting effects were introduced in the Stuttgart production, which we will also have in the Zurich production." This diligence pays off: The tour won the "WhatsOnStage Award" for best British tour production.

"Mary Poppins" is still relevant today, says Freddy Burger, co-organizer and owner of Freddy Burger Management: "The fact that the film is already over 50 years old and is still known worldwide proves that the classic still fascinates several generations today." The musical is reminiscent of the feature film and combines this with modern elements, making it a contemporary stage play. "The Broadway hit is colorful, lively and fresh." So nothing stands in the way of a supercalifragilistiexpialigetic performance.

64 wash cycles per week

  1. 18 articulated lorries transport the scenery, costumes and other material from one location to the next. Over 100 people are involved in the dismantling and removal of the show. It takes 22 hours to dismantle the set and three days to set it up again in the next theater.

  2. In total, over 120 people work in front of and behind the scenes during a performance.

  3. There are 64 washes per week. Some costumes have to be made dirty again with a special dye after washing, for example the costumes of the chimney sweeps. The children's costumes are checked for the right size every day.

  4. There is a large dryer right behind the stage for drying the large plush animal costumes, in which the performers get very sweaty. The actors are not allowed to hang the plush costumes in the dressing room when they are wet.

  5. Around 600 props are used during the show. These include baby carriages, sweet shop counters - and of course Mary Poppins' famous umbrella.
