Rocky Horror Show: A cult classic as a movie - but even more awesome as a stage musical

An actor invented it

When Richard O'Brien's film career comes to a standstill, he writes "The Rocky Horror Show". In the play, he combines his love of sci-fi and horror films. His friend Jim Sherman liked it, and the show ran for a few weeks at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1973.

Box office hit

The quirky theater production has been performed in more than 30 countries, and around 20 million viewers worldwide have enjoyed the play.

Big names rejected

According to singer Meat Loaf, the film studio originally wanted to cast Elvis Presley in the lead role. Mick Jagger was also interested in a part.
