From 27 to 28 August 2016, the ancient Roman town of Augusta Raurica will be rattling with armor for the 21st time: the traditional Roman festival will once again be celebrated in Kaiseraugst. Over 700 participants will give visitors a fascinating insight into life in Roman times in the well-preserved ruins and amphitheater of the former Roman city. With knight fights, chariot races, dancing and music.
Whether carving bones, target shooting with clay balls or painting shields and swords: At Switzerland's largest Roman festival, there's no shortage of things to do this year if you want to try out for yourself what the Romans did back then. Those who prefer to watch will also get their money's worth: In the gladiator arena, you can watch re-enacted sword fights, get an insight into the gladiator school and watch the cavalry practise.
Idefix Caldus - the hot dog
The makers of the Roman Days clearly had fun with old Latin expressions and witty allusions. Fans of Asterix and Obelix will be delighted with the "Idefix Caldus - the hot dog, in the "Mons glacialis", the ice cream world, there will be ice cream and drinks, in the "Angelus Dulcedinum", the "sweet corner", there will be crêpes, cakes and drinks. But of course there are also Roman specialties to try in addition to today's catering options: From snake bread to suckling pig, smoked trout to berry wine, you can relive and enjoy the Roman world of pleasure one-to-one.
Roman crafts, workshops and live archaeology
Whether you learn how to talk like Caesar or attend a coin minting workshop: at the Roman Festival you can immerse yourself in the world of the Romans, experience their crafts and learn a lot - from Roman jewelry to the Roman family - you can make your own purse, borrow wreaths and tunics and play "Who wants to be a sestertius millionaire". The Roman festival is open on Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm and on Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.
