Album of the week: "Camila" by Camila Cabello

12/01/2018 written by Michel Imhof
Camila Cabello broke away from the casting band Fifth Harmony at the end of 2016 to do her own thing. The move has paid off: her first song "Havana" is being played up and down. And the debut album "Camila" is also well worth listening to.

The artist

Born in Havana to a Cuban mother and a Mexican father, she fled to the United States with her mother six years after her birth, where they settled in Florida and Camila went to school. In 2012, she took a decisive step: she applied for the US version of the casting show "X Factor", but was eliminated early. Juror Simon Cowell, who has also put together bands such as One Direction and Little Mix from individual candidates to form a group, brought Camila Cabello back and founded the group Fifth Harmony with her, which came third in the casting show. Initially, success failed to materialize. Until Fifth Harmony celebrated worldwide success with the album "Reflection" and the single "Worth It". The single "Work From Home" from the album "7/27" was one of the biggest hits around the globe in 2016. At the end of 2016, Cabello decided to leave the band and do her own thing. After several collaborations - including Shawn Mendes and Major Lazer - Cabello released the single "Crying In The Club", which was written by Sia and herself and was only moderately successful. Only the second single "Havana" brought her a worldwide hit.

The album

The 20-year-old's first solo album is very personal, not least because of its title - "Camila". "The album is the perfect introduction to me," says Cabello in an interview. "It describes how I'm feeling at the moment and how I felt last year." The musician co-wrote all the songs and put her own signature on the album: "The best advice for me was that you should make the music you want. You shouldn't put any pressure on yourself to find out if people like it." Of course, the lead single "Havana" and later the follow-up "Never Be The Same" gave a first taste of the album.

The verdict

Evil tongues claimed after Camila's withdrawal from Fifth Harmony that the band had now lost its good voice. But because Fifth Harmony's new album leaves rather a lot to be desired, but Camila Cabello's album is very well done, these evil tongues could be right. Camila's album comes with modern R&B pop and skillfully integrates Latin American sounds. Cabello is often reminiscent of Ariana Grande without seeming to copy her. Camila is back - better than ever.
