Album of the week: Coldplay through "Kaleidoscope"

14/07/2017 written by Michel Imhof
Well, it's not really an album, but an EP. Nevertheless, Coldplay deliver five interesting tracks with "Kaleidoscope".

The band
Big, bigger, Coldplay: the British band fills stadiums on every continent and can look back on 21 years of band history. Coldplay had their first major success in 2000 with the single "Yellow", and in 2005 they delivered the best-selling album of the year worldwide with "X&Y". Chris Martin and his band have released seven albums since their formation, most recently "A Head Full of Dreams" in December 2015. Coldplay will be touring with this album until the end of the year.

The EP
"Kaleidoscope" delivers what its name promises. Coldplay in different facets. The EP, which only contains five tracks, is very diverse in style. Sometimes EDM, sometimes Coldplay from 2005, sometimes R&B. It is also interesting to note that four tracks had already been released before the EP came out, including "Something Just Like This", the collaboration with the Chainsmokers.

Verdict
The new EP can be seen as a mix of a continuation of "A Head Full of Dreams" or also as a continuation of "Something Just Like This", the collaboration with the Chainsmokers, in which Coldplay moved closer to the EDM trend. And yet there are also typical Coldplay elements in the style of 2005 and 2008, for example the piano solo at the end of "All I Can Think About Is You" is reminiscent of "Clocks". And despite the diversity of the songs, Coldplay have managed to bring them into a uniform style. Five harmonious tracks for dreaming and relaxing.

Recommended tracks
"All I Can Think About Is You" - Starts comfortably and breaks out at the end, a great, spherical song in typical Coldplay style.

"Hypnotized" - 5.5-minute track for dreaming and - I can't say it any other way - chilling.

Live
Coldplay are currently still on a major world tour, which is expected to end in South America on November 15, 2017.
