Album of the week: "Little Dark Age" by MGMT

09/02/2018 written by Michel Imhof
The New York duo are back after their flop album "MGMT". And they don't disappoint!

The duo

The two members of MGMT (abbreviation for Management, original band name was The Management in 2002) originally met while studying music at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser started making music together and after a while they got a record deal. They have been on the road as MGMT since 2005, celebrating their greatest successes to date in 2008 and 2009 - firstly with the Grammy-nominated song "Kids" and secondly with the album "Oracular Spectacular". They already won a Grammy in 2009 - for a remix of Justice. After two more albums, one of which flopped, MGMT are now back with "Little Dark Time".

The album

And how they are coming back! "Little Dark Time" deals with the current times, including the election of US President Donald Trump, and impresses with exciting lyrics. In terms of sound, MGMT's fourth album is fun: modern 80s pop mixed with a bit of LSD. Allegedly, the song "James" was recorded after a long night of LSD, which is why VanWyngarden has such a deep voice in the song "I was screaming things about Pakistan for hours," he said in an interview. "When you're high it's easier to fight. When you're high you don't have to know why" is the title of the song "When you're small". So: "When you're high, it's easier to fight. When you're high, you don't have to know why."

The verdict

MGMT's new album is fun, it throws you back into a wicked 80s rock-pop shed. There's no shortage of synthesizers here! They have remained true to their psychedelic sound, the lyrics have become a little darker, and in some cases also funnier. The opening track "She Works Out Too Much" deals with the fitness craze and narcissism, the song "TSLAMP" (stands for "Time spent looking at my phone") with the smartphone addiction of today's generation. A great album for relaxing and listening, more for a hipster bar than a club.

The play tips

TSLAMP - Psychedelic indie pop song with witty lyrics

Me and Michael - Reminiscent of Kylie Minogue songs from the eighties.
