Vance Joy brings the ukulele back into the pop world with his album "Nation Of Two". He knows how to handle lyrics skillfully and has produced 13 beautiful new songs.
The artist
The Australian singer Vance Joy is known for the song "Riptide", which was heard all over the world shortly after the release of his first EP "God Loves You When You're Dancing". James Keogh, Vance's real name, previously studied law at Monash University in Melbourne. The Aussie was also active in sport before his music career: between 2008 and 2009, he played defense in the reserve team of the AFL (Australian Football League) club Richmond Tigers.
The album
"Nation of Two" is Vance Joy's second album.
Almost five years have passed since his last and first album: Now the wait is over. Vance Joy is back with his album "Nation Of Two". He was inspired by the book "Between Them" by Richard Ford. In a video published on social media, Vance explains: "I love the idea of two people living in a happy and self-contained universe that begins and ends together." The still unknown Mimi Cave directed three of his songs: "Call If You Need Me", "We're Going Home" and "Lay It on Me".
The verdict
Vance had every intention of writing a solid second album. One that doesn't deviate from the level. With "Nation Of Two", he has achieved this: the 13 new songs tell of love and longing - Vance knows how to sing his way into people's hearts with his lyrics and his ukulele. Musically, there are no big surprises on the record, but no disappointments either. Although "Little Boy" with stories from his childhood and "I'm With You" - a beautiful love song - stand out, the typical "Vance Riptide ukulele sound" is guaranteed.
