Baloise Session: Proven, new and exclusive

30/08/2017 written by Carlotta Henggeler
Every year, the international music elite meets at the Baloise Session. Which stars is Beatrice Stirnimann, CEO, particularly looking forward to this year? We present some of the highlights of this year's program.

Miles Davis, Sir Elton John, Tom Jones and Eric Clapton have already played on the Baloise Session stage. Every year, the festival surprises us with a program full of delicacies - it's a well-stocked grab bag. And it has been for 32 years. Which act is Beatrice Stirnimann, CEO of the Baloise Session, particularly looking forward to? "Of course we're very excited and it's a great honor that Alicia Keys is playing two concerts in our intimate atmosphere with club tables and candlelight. We are particularly proud of this superstar."

Alicia Keys, the beautiful New York musician with the chicken-skin voice and the magical piano. In 2017, Alicia Keys, Nelly Furtado, Alison Goldfrapp, Imelda May and Ira May are among the many female singers coming to Basel. "Yes, we have a lot of female stars. But when you take a second look at the program, it quickly becomes clear that with Chris Rea, Kaleo, Madness and Max Giesinger, we also have great musical representatives of the male sex on stage this year," says Stirnimann and tells us what she is particularly proud of in 2017: "That we have once again managed to put together a program that combines the new, the tried and tested and the exclusive in one program. Every evening, our program combinations tell musical stories that connect the two acts."

Global star Alicia Keys, real name Alicia Augello-Cook, will have plenty to tell. For example, about her time as a multiple "The Voice" judge, or how the songs on her new album "Here" came about. The 36-year-old with the golden voice was already in Switzerland in summer 2013. The mother of two will be accompanied at the Baloise Session by two local singers: Ira May from Basel and Annie Goodchild, originally from Boston. The latter has been part of the Basel scene for four years. Two concert evenings with strong voices, in an intimate setting, with candlelight and a club atmosphere. An ambience that the stars also like, such as Dire Straits legend Mark Knopfler, who liked all the vibes, or rock star Pink: "I had the closest contact with the audience here on my entire tour."

Golden Girl live twice
Since her debut in 2001 with the hit "Fallin'", the New Yorker has been one of the greats of the music industry. The vocal virtuoso has since sold 30 million records worldwide and has been showered with countless awards. She is without doubt one of the most successful soul and R 'n' B singers of all time. Alicia Keys on the piano is like magic - only with instrument and voice instead of magic wand and tricks.

Musically versatile
Nelly Furtado, a Canadian with Portuguese roots, moves with ease between English-language pop and R 'n' B. The multi-instrumentalist also mixes folk elements and fado. She has stormed the charts with catchy tunes such as "Powerless", "All God Things" and "Maneater". In Basel, she will also be presenting songs from her new album "The Ride".

Tender words from Germany
Music poet Max Giesinger owes his success to the show "The Voice of Germany". His coach and sponsor is Xavier Naidoo. Since then, he has released two albums and the hit single "80 Millionen", which became the European Championship anthem.

Hot electropop
British duo Goldfrapp have been delivering atmospheric electropop for two decades. Their debut album "Felt Mountain" hit the charts straight away. On album no. 7, "Silver Eye", Alison Goldfrapp mixes acoustic-inspired songs with a dance sound.

String concert with dance beats
Before Goldfrapp, the British trio Clean Bandit will get the crowd dancing at the Baloise Session with their mix of electropop and string instruments. They made a name for themselves with their songs "Rather Be" and "Real Love", and this year they cemented their place in the electropop industry with the number one hit "Rockabye" with Anne-Marie and Sean Paul and the song "Symphony" with Sweden's Zara Larsson.

British gentleman
Chris Rea's songs are classics, whether "Josephine" or "Driving Home For Christmas". Thanks to his raspy, warm voice, he has sold 30 million albums. With his latest production, "Road Songs For Lovers", the Brit is once again moving onto a poppier level.

Enchanting Iceland
Iceland has much more to offer than Björk: Asgeir is the new star in the Icelandic music sky. He has already released two spherical, enchanting albums, carried by his soulful head voice. His latest work "Afterglow" was in the Swiss charts.
