Zurich arrogance? Newcomers Dabu Fantastic want to launch their new album "Drinks" in Zurich's Hallenstadion. But that sounds more ostentatious than it is.
Political: "If everyone calmed down and didn't take themselves so seriously, everything would be much more pleasant." So says DJ Arts, one of the two main protagonists of Dabu Fantastic from the Zurich Oberland. Dabu Fantastic are David "Dabu" Bucher from Mönchaltorf and DJ Arts, actually Andreas Christen, from Dürnten. With their songs and mix of pop, dialect rap and socially critical lyrics, they have been achieving respectable success on Swiss stages for some time now.
Reassuringly, in their current song "Angelina", currently one of two Swiss songs in the local singles charts, the duo address today's dating culture. "Ufenand gahts, aber näbenand nöd", it says. "Beruig di mal" is the main message of the new album "Drinks" (released on September 2). "All the songs are about escaping from everyday life. And drinks help with that," says Dabu, "they're significantly cheaper than a vacation flight."
Hard at work: Under the motto "Basel, Bern, Zurich, Las Vegas", Dabu Fantastic will be performing at the same three venues for three weeks in a row in August - in Basel, Bern and Zurich. "In Switzerland, you never actually play in the same place for a long time," says DJ Arts, "but that's exactly what we wanted to do, following the example of Céline Dion's Las Vegas shows. We've never been there before, but a performance with Céline, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and white tigers would be great."
Big: The tour finale, the album launch of "Drinks", will take place in Zurich's Hallenstadion. "We wanted to play in a sold-out Hallenstadion for once," says DJ Arts. "But selling out is a bit difficult, so we're doing the concert in the smaller Lager Ost, right next to the ice machine."
Urban: Dabu Fantastic now live in Zurich's Kreis 5 district. "There's nothing better than swimming in the Limmat," says Dabu. The hallmarks of Zurich? The dialect and "that we're not a bit surprised when a drink costs 19 francs," says DJ Arts. "In other Swiss cities, the price would be shocking."
Satisfied: David Bucher and Andreas Christen can now live off the income from their music. "As long as we don't have a family, a detached house or a car, it's enough," says Dabu. What they do besides music is no less impressive: "Making love and swimming."
