Eliane Müller: "It's nice when the music touches"

30/12/2019 written by Christoph Soltmannowski

Eliane's new album has just been released - it is simply called "Eliane" and is her fifth since winning "Die grössten Schweizer Talente" in 2012. She can be seen live again from January. The Hochdorf native told us why she loves being on stage - but also enjoys working normally in the office.

event: Which song on your new album means the most to you personally?
Eliane: That's the last one on the album - "For You". It's about saying goodbye.

Does this song have a reference to a specific person?
It's about my uncle, who has been my manager for the last six years. He had become a very close friend and a reference person for me. The closer you are to a person, the more the question of why and wherefore arises, which you can't avoid. It's just very present. You just have to learn to deal with it. It's certainly the most thought-provoking song on the album.

You're going on tour soon. What do you prefer - recording songs
or playing on stage?
Being on stage. Recording songs in the studio has much less to do with emotions at that moment. But when I tell my story on stage and sing my song to it, I can share the emotions directly with the audience.

Are you someone who likes to reveal their feelings?
I would say that I don't dislike being the center of attention. Otherwise I wouldn't feel comfortable on stage. There's a part of me that was like that even as a child. In kindergarten I was the clown for some people, I told jokes and rehearsed chashperlitheater.

So you realized your lifelong dream with your music career?
No, I didn't. That was never my dream, I never wanted to make music my profession. I always said that music should remain my hobby, as a profession I would lose the joy of it.

But you don't regret it?
No.

Doyou have another big dream?
One of my big dreams in life is clearly to have a family and children.

Are you excited to see how your new songs are received on stage? Doyou often get reactions that you hadn't expected?
Yes, with some songs that I don't consider to be so enormously emotional, I get feedback from people who tell me that they were very emotionally moved by them and that they can identify with them one hundred percent.

How does feedback like that affect you?
It gives me extreme satisfaction. It makes me realize that the goal has been achieved. For me at least, the aim of making music is to touch people and share something.

Do you always manage to do that?
At every concert, actually. When I look around and see that certain people have tears in their eyes or say at the autograph session afterwards: "Hey, I had chicken skin for almost two hours", then it's always a joy and satisfaction when I realize that I'm not just making music for myself. But that I can actually bring people joy for two hours. Most of them even longer if they then take the album home with them and incorporate my music into their everyday lives.

Not only do you enjoy being on stage, but you also spent along time on the road in a camper vanin the summer
- what was that like?
It's very liberating to simply load the things you need into a vehicle, drive off and completely detach yourself from everyday life - to explore the world.

What did you experience?
I was on the road for almost six weeks in Scandinavia, it's an incredibly beautiful region, with lots of open spaces, forests and the sea. It was a wonderful summer. I met a lot of really good people and wrote about eight songs. And I took care of my master's thesis.

You said Master's thesis - so you're also working at another level?
Yes, I've just completed my Master's degree in communication and management in healthcare. From spring, I have a part-time job with a 40% workload in marketing and communication at an insurance broker - I really enjoy that. It's a very good balance for me, it gives me the long-awaited structure that I've always wanted alongside my music.

Did you miss the structure alongside making music?
Yes, every day and every week is different. But I'm a very structured person, so the job is somehow good for me. It gives me a normal everyday life again. And I can be in a normal role where I'm not Eliane the artist, but simply an employee who does her tasks and projects.
