Evanescence: A band buys Switzerland empty

13/03/2018 written by Sidonia Maurer
Evanescence made their breakthrough in 2003 with the songs "My Immortal" and "Bring Me to Life". Now the band is touring the world with their new album "Synthesis" and is looking forward to a (shopping) stop in Switzerland.

There is much more behind "Synthesis" than just the fusion of a symphonic orchestra and electronic music that Evanescence is known for. "With this album, we want to retell our story and also emphasize new elements. So it's also about the past and the future," says Amy Lee, founding member of Evanescence.
Evanescence (from the Latin evanescere: to fade away)

When the band formed in 1995, they were looking for a name that would describe their uniqueness and not be associated with something that already existed. So they decided on Evanescence (from the Latin evanescere: to fade away) and thus proved their uniqueness. The visual aspect was initially the only thing Amy associated with the name Evanescence. Over the years, however, the special name has grown in significance, reflecting not only Amy's career but also her relationship with the band.

"There are many moments that I would change when I look back on my career," admits Amy. But ultimately it's like growing up: "You always realize what you can do better and what you did wrong". But making mistakes and learning from them is part of growing up. "I've definitely learned from my mistakes."

"Composing is out of this world"

"Commerciality has always been an enemy of art."

Writing songs has something supernatural about it for Amy. In order to be able to receive these supernatural influences, you have to open up and allow yourself to do so. This is also how the song "Hi-Lo" came about on the new album "Synthesis", which features violinist Lindsey Stirling, who is best known for her rather fun crossover projects. Lindsey was a natural choice. "The solo came from her. She created this masterpiece," Amy enthuses, adding: "I respect her as a musician and I think our music is very similar in many ways." "Commerciality has always been an enemy of art," Amy is certain. "In my opinion, it's not much different from when I was a child." There are still people who make music that makes you feel something, and those whose aim is to make money from it. Still, Amy says it's hard to hate all mainstream pop per se. "We have access to so much more music than we used to. That's mostly a blessing." Amy is particularly looking forward to Switzerland. "As well as the beautiful scenery and friendly people, I can't wait to go shopping in Switzerland. You have the most amazing boutiques."
