Hans Zimmer - sound magician with a flair for action

29/04/2016 written by Christoph Soltmannowski
He is Hollywood's most sought-after and innovative film music writer and has composed over 100 film scores: German-born Hans Zimmer. Tickets are now on sale again for his concert on May 9 at the Hallenstadion Zurich.

Few people know where Hans Zimmer had his first big gig: he played keyboards for the English pop band Buggles at the end of the 1970s and can also be seen at the end of their legendary music video for "Video killed the Radio Star". That was back in 1979, and only a surprise success for the German expatriate, who earned his living in England as a composer of advertising jingles.

The commissions became larger, from the beginning of the 80s he began composing film music and landed his first success with "Rain Man", settling in L. A.. With his combination of orchestral and synthesizer sounds, he became known as a sound magician and was therefore hired more and more often.
Hans Zimmer wrote the music scores for blockbusters such as "Driving Miss Daisy", "12 Years a Slave", "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Mission Impossible 2", "Batman", "Spiderman", "Dark Knight" or "Da Vinci Code - Sacrilege" and many more.

Working in an ancient brothel

Today, four Grammys and two Golden Globes adorn the trophy cabinet of his villa in Malibu, where he had his workspace recreated in the style of a 19th century brothel in Vienna.
"Hans Zimmer is the contemporary composer to work with when it comes to translating a visual narrative into sound," says Steve McQueen, the director of "12 Years a Slave", about him.

The great world successes of film music at the Hallenstadion Zurich

Hans Zimmer presents his major global hits from "Pirates of the Caribbean", "The Lion King", "Gladiator", "Inception", "The Dark Knight", "Da Vinci Code" and many other films live on tour at the Hallenstadion. These are Hans Zimmer's first ever concerts, following a festival appearance in Belgium in 2000 and two sold-out debut concerts in London in the fall of 2014. He gathers 70 musicians around him - his studio band, an orchestra, a choir and soloists such as Lebo M, who sang the striking vocals for "The Lion King". Hans Zimmer uses his great cinema melodies to create a bombastic sound spectacle in an elaborate visual production.

London audiences experienced the first performance of this kind at the Eventim Apollo Theater in October 2014, and the concerts were sold out to the last seat within two days.
