In the house of the Montreux founder: As if "Funky Claude" was still with us

15/07/2017 written by Christoph Soltmannowski
Where Claude Nobs (1936 - 2013) can still be felt: home visit to the (good) spirit of the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Just 700 meters above Montreux, in the small village of Caux, Claude Nobs, the founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival who died in 2013, lived for many years. First in "Le Picotin", which was converted from a farmhouse and stable into a magnificent chalet, and later in the neighboring chalet "Le Grillon", built in 2006. Today, the property with its incredible view of Lake Geneva is a mecca for Montreux jazz fans. As in "Funky Claude's" lifetime, the stars of the festival, VIP guests and friends of the worldwide "Montreux family" meet here for parties, private concerts and other special occasions. Here, in every nook and cranny, you will find mementos of the great talents and gifts from legends who have visited Montreux over five decades - such as the legendary Freddy Mercury grand piano, pictures, memorabilia, instruments and the train models that Claude diligently collected - as well as over 200,000 records.

We were allowed to visit Claude's long-time home with our video team - and felt his spirit.

Unesco World Heritage Site in the basement

The fire-protected basement of "Le Picotin" is also home to the most important legacy of the enterprising visionary Nobs. Since the beginnings of the festival in 1967, the Montreux founder had all concerts recorded in sound and vision - a total of more than 5,000 concerts, 11,000 hours of video recordings and 6,000 hours of audio recordings. The collection has been digitized since 2010 and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.

The Montreux Jazz Festival continues until tomorrow, Saturday, July 15, 2017.
