Montreux Jazz Festival: Lukas Graham in conversation - "7 Years" was created in 3 hours

They have long been stars in Denmark. Lukas Graham achieved international success with their single "7 Years" in 2015 and are now touring the world with their global debut. The Montreux Jazz Festival was one of the destinations. We met the band before their performance.

Lukas Graham is not the frontman's name, as many believe. However, the singer has the same first name - he is called Lukas Forchhammer. The songs are also all written by him. He often tells stories about his childhood and his love for his parents. His roots are very important to him: the Dane was born in the alternative housing estate Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen and experienced an unusual childhood as a result.

"I grew up in this unique commune, a former military area. My two great friends were warned by their parents never to go there."

The band celebrated their breakthrough with singles like "Mama Said" and "7 Years" and received three Grammy nominations this year.

"I think there are certain things you write where you just have a really strong feeling that you think, okay, if everyone who hears this song has just five percent of that feeling, then it's going to be a worldwide hit." - Lukas Forchhammer
