It's a piece of sporting history: the Formula E race in Zurich marks the end of a decades-long wait for Swiss racing.
Formula E spectacle in Zurich in 2018!
Next year will go down in racing history: With the Formula E race on June 10, 2018 in the city of Zurich, a car race will take place on Swiss soil for the first time in 63 years.
And a quiet one at that! The electric motors of Formula E only whir when the cars whizz along the roads at 200 km/h. The electric racing series has been around since 2014 and competes in major cities such as Hong Kong, Rome, Sao Paulo, Berlin, New York and Montreal. In Zurich, too, it will soon be racing on a temporary track on public roads through the city center and along Lake Zurich. What a backdrop for the TV pictures that will be broadcast all over the world!
The start-finish straight and the pits will be set up at Enge harbor. The race then takes place on a 2.46 km long track through the district, the route is secured with crash barriers and safety barriers. Streetcar tracks are filled in for the race day. 50,000 spectators are expected for the mega event.
Most people are hoping for a home triumph: ex-Formula 1 driver Sébastien Buemi is the most successful Formula E driver in Switzerland; Buemi was twice runner-up in the world championship and once world champion. He is also one of the top favorites for the 2017/18 season. Neel Jani is the second Swiss driver to join the team this season. Thanks to Formula E, the two best Swiss racing drivers will be able to compete in their own country for the first time.
This major racing highlight is made possible by an exceptional permit, which allows the electric racing series to start despite the continued ban on circuit racing in Switzerland (since the fatal accident at Le Mans in 1955).
