Longines CSI Ascona: Top-class premiere

29/05/2017 written by Kevin Lutz
The former airport grounds in Ascona TI will be transformed into a paradise for equestrian sports enthusiasts over the second-last weekend in July. The 25th edition of the Longines CSI Ascona from July 20 to 23 will attract not only the best, but this year even the world's best show jumping riders to the sunny Swiss town.

For the first time, the tournament in Ascona is a 5-star event, making it the first tournament at the highest international level in Italian-speaking Switzerland. The organizers have their new title partner Longines to thank for this promotion.

"We see this new partnership as a reward and recognition for our great efforts in recent years. The collaboration will give our tournament even more significance, splendor and prestige," said the OC presidium Peter and Manuela Bacchi at the announcement last year.

While the prize money in 2016, when the event was still a 4-star tournament, was 316,000 francs, this summer at least half a million francs will be paid out to the best show jumpers.

Seven years ago, the Swiss were still only able to choose from three top-class tournaments in their home country; in 2017, there are seven in total: Basel, Zurich, Geneva, Lausanne, St. Gallen, St. Moritz and now Ascona. While in the past it was more of a build-up tournament for younger horses or top cracks after a break, this year the world's best riders will be competing for points, prestige and prize money.
