The next Swiss party?

09/10/2017 written by Mathias Germann
Switzerland won no fewer than eight World Championship medals at the World Championships in St. Moritz. Now the ski circus is returning to the Engadin.

Three gold, two silver and two bronze. In February, Swiss skiers experienced two fantastic weeks at the World Championships in St. Moritz. The memories have not yet faded. And they will be particularly vivid in our minds again from December 8 to 11. This is because the women will be competing in an Alpine Combined (Friday) and two Super-Gs (Saturday and Sunday) on the PistaEngiadina.

Will there be anything to cheer about then? If our ski girls don't get injured, the chances are pretty good. After all, both the combined and the super-G are something like Swiss Ski's chocolate disciplines.

Let's start with the combined and world champion Wendy Holdener. After the downhill, the 24-year-old from Unteriberg withstood the enormous pressure of expectation from thousands of ski fans, raced through the slalom pole forest and ultimately onto the top step of the podium. Gold! World champion! But wasn't there something else? Exactly: Holdener's teammate Michelle Gisin (23) rounded off the day with silver. And almost turned February 10 into a sporting national holiday.

Amidst all the jubilation, a small tragedy was almost forgotten. Lara Gut (26) tore her cruciate ligament while skiing in before the slalom. Sitting in the snow, she cried bitter tears. However, these have long since dried and Gut is back on the attack. How she will perform now? That's written in the stars. One thing is certain: her return to the Engadin will be emotional. Gut loves St. Moritz, where she first stood on the World Cup podium at 16 and even celebrated her first victory at 17.

The ingredients for a new Swiss ski party are in place. Will there be something to celebrate again?
