Münsingen, a suburb of Bern, has a population of just under 12,000 and according to Wikipedia, its sights include the Münsingen Reformed Church, Münsingen Castle and the Münsingen Psychiatric Center. In other words, a place of no great importance.
And yet Münsingen is familiar to football fans in particular. One reason for this could be that national team goalkeeper Roman Bürki grew up at FC Münsingen. But mainly it has to do with the Swiss Football Cup. Because practically no other amateur club has been drawn so often with a top club in recent years. In other words, for 90 minutes at a time, footballing Switzerland looked to Münsingen. To FCM, the club from the 1st division, Group 2.
League giants and perennial champions FC Basel have been guests twice in the last four years. In 2013, the Bernese side narrowly lost to FCB in the second round. A penalty from Matías Delgado saved the Bebbi from embarrassment.
One season later, the Münsinger team was once again drawn to face the great FCB. And for the FCM, there was nothing less at stake than a place in the semi-finals of the Swiss Cup. However, the overpowering Basel flexed its muscles in the Cup quarter-final in front of 4,000 spectators at the Münsingen Sandreutenen, winning 6:1 without discussion, but later losing the final 3:0 to FC Sion.
This FC Sion - THE Swiss Cup team par excellence - then had to face Münsingen in the new Cup season in the same year. The underdogs came close again this time, but were ultimately eliminated from the Cup after losing 2-0 in the second round.
In 2017, another big name in Swiss football will be coming to the Sandreutenen in the cup round of 16 - and not just any big name, but the Bernese Young Boys of all teams. Bern and Münsingen are less than 15 minutes away by car. A real derby!
And if we have already taken a look at the past Cup years: In the past, YB has always been knocked out against a lower league team. Be it against Challenge League side Winterthur last season or against 1st division club SC Buochs in 2014. So it's high time for a Münsingen Cup sensation!
