Tedros Teclebrhan, better known as Teddy, is much more than just a comedian: he is one of the most versatile and influential figures in 21st-century German entertainment. His work moves fluidly between acting, music and virtuoso improvisation.
From the Horn of Africa to the Swabian Alb
At the age of seven months, Teclebrhan came to Germany with his family from Eritrea and grew up in the tranquil Swabian town of Mössingen. It was precisely this cultural tension – between his Eritrean roots and the reality of provincial Swabia – that became the breeding ground for his later powers of observation and unique humour.
Skill meets YouTube gold
Before conquering the internet, Teclebrhan laid a solid foundation: he completed classical acting training. Serious roles, such as in the ZDF series Kommissar Stolberg, showcased his dramatic talent.
The breakthrough: «Was labersch du?»
In 2011, he achieved what is now referred to as a historic internet moment. With the video «Umfrage zum Integrationstest» (Survey on the integration test) and the introduction of the cult figure Antoine Burtz, he broke viral boundaries. His mixture of blunt slang, absurd humour and subtle milieu study struck a chord with the spirit of the times. Teclebrhan thus established a completely new genre between music video, social media satire and sketch comedy. This was followed by other characters such as the eccentric Percy, the pedantic Ernst Riedler and the clueless Lohan, all of whom became fixtures in his online universe.
Stage presence and depth
Parallel to his click records, Teclebrhan conquered the big halls. His live programmes – including «Was labersch du...?!» and the Teddy Show – regularly sell out quickly. On stage, his full force unfolds: he combines stand-up with live music, dance and rapid role changes to create an unpredictable Gesamtkunstwerk.
However, behind the loud façade and broad smile often lies a subtle core. Teclebrhan addresses issues such as origin, prejudice, role models and cultural misunderstandings without pointing the moral finger.
