The Visit
A tragic comedy by Friedrich Dürrenmatt
To mark its 40th anniversary, the Kinder- und Jugendtheater Zug is presenting Dürrenmatt’s gripping story of Claire Zachanassian, who returns to her impoverished hometown of Güllen fifty years later as a fabulously wealthy billionaire. Once, her heart was broken there and her honor was stolen. Pregnant at just 14 years old, she was driven out of the small town—now she brings the hope of prosperity—but her offer comes at a deadly price: She promises wealth for everyone if the villagers kill her former lover, Alfred Ill.
A grotesque spectacle unfolds into a drama about guilt, responsibility, and the corruptibility of morality. Perhaps that is precisely why the play remains as relevant as ever. How far will a person—or an entire community—go when it comes to their own advantage?
