Being constantly available is a thing of the past. Lennart Schilgen is back with his third show—and is conspicuous by his absence. When he’s not giving concerts and racking up cabaret awards (Prix Pantheon, Stuttgarter Besen, and many more), he does one thing above all else: he takes off.
Among other things, he goes on a bike ride, visits a monastery, and heads to a communist summer camp. Or he simply delves into the depths of his own thoughts—which is often adventurous enough. The result is songs about the detours and twists and turns in the world and within his own mind. Full of lightheartedness and wit, yet without shying away from exploring the dark corners. This time, he dredges up things that have been swept under the rug for years: the old PUR cassette. His elementary school report cards. The incident at the night bus stop. Fortunately, Schilgen navigates safely across every abyss—carried by his accomplished piano and guitar playing, his voice, and his “alert mind, with heart, humor, and sly punchlines” (laudation for the “Tuttlinger Krähe”). And when all else fails, there are always the poems: little linguistic surprise bags, utterly silly, yet supremely artful. The recently published “Collected Works” are—if I may say so briefly here—already something of a bestseller by poetry collection standards.
