Loud, fast and hard, with guitar riffs of orchestral scope and mystical fantasy lyrics - that is the music of Manowar. The band has been on stage since 1980 and has earned a worldwide fan base.
The band's story begins in New York in 1980. Bassist Joey DeMaio works for the band Black Sabbath and meets Ross "The Boss" Friedman, the guitarist of the band Shakin' Streets, on their tour. Because of their shared passion for hard music, they decide to form a band themselves. Eric Adams, an old school friend of DeMaio's, is hired to sing. Carl Canedy, who is later replaced by Donnie Hamzik, sits on the drums.
Through the contacts of Ross "The Boss", a record company becomes aware of the band. In 1981 Manowar record the first demo tape, the first album "Battle Hymns" is released in 1982. Until 1987 Manowar release five albums and change their record companies again and again. The album "Fighting The World" and the tour of the same name mark the band's final breakthrough in Europe.
In the band's decades-long history, ten band members have joined and left so far. Only founding members Eric Adams as singer and bassist Joey DeMaio are still part of the successful metal band today. At the beginning, Manowar is mainly successful in Europe, until they become famous worldwide over the decades.
Style and discography of Manowar
.
Manowar are considered the inventors of true metal and still stand for an archaic male image. The band combines classic, hard metal sound with symphonic sounds from classical music. The band also incorporates a pinch of folklore from very different cultures into their metal anthems. The voice of Eric Adams contributes to the recognition value with its richness of facets and vocal power.
The lyrics are inspired by Norse mythology, pick up on heroic sagas and often focus on glory and honour. The design of the booklets and the markedly masculine appearance of the musicians also strike in this direction. Allegedly, the second record contract is signed in the blood of the band members.
Over the years, there are always exciting collaborations with other artists: for example, Manowar win Orson Welles, the director of the cinematic masterpiece "Citizen Kane", as a narrator's voice for two of their recordings. Another time, acting legend Christopher Lee takes on the same function.
A close bond with the fans marks the band's journey. A special greeting, the "Sign Of The Hammer", is used at concerts, for example. Here, the left hand clasps the wrist of the right hand, which is then raised above the head with a clenched fist like a hammer. Within the metal scene, Manowar shy away from no arguments and often judge the music of other artists mercilessly.
