In early 2021, a young talent from California appears on the international scene to take the music world by storm. Her name is Olivia Rodrigo, she is not even 18 years old at the time and breaks various records on Spotify with her debut single "Driver's License". The song - a ballad that is as beautiful as it is sad - foreshadows that a new star will soon shine in the pop sky.
Olivia Rodrigo is certainly not a complete unknown, as she has already appeared in the Disney TV series "Bizaardvark" and "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series". For the latter, she participated in the songwriting for the mega-successful "All I Want", which is also included on the soundtrack to the series. Olivia can not only act, sing and play the piano, no, she also writes songs, and that, mind you, already in her teens - the term "child prodigy" hits the nail right on the head here.
From the Disney series to the top of the charts
When "Driver's License" comes out in 2021, the girl with the touching voice is suddenly on everyone's lips and ears. While the follow-up single "Deja Vu" goes stylistically in the same direction, the newcomer hits completely new, and significantly rockier notes with "Good 4 U" - and secures pole position in the single charts from Germany to the USA. From the highly emotional ballad to the cheeky pop-rock song - this range once again fires up the anticipation for the eagerly awaited album. In May 2021, the time has finally come: "Sour" is released - and exceeds all expectations. The critics overflow with praise for the eleven songs and the fans are blown away anyway.
While the music ranges from soft pop to (punk) rock sounds, Olivia Rodrigo deals in her lyrics with the topics that probably move all girls in the transition from teenager to woman: Love, jealousy, pain of separation, self-doubt. In the opener "Brutal", for example, she sings "And lately I'm a nervous wreck, 'cause I love people I don't like and I hate every song I write". For all the credibility that her song lyrics undoubtedly possess, this statement is hard to believe, however - after all, Olivia delivers one official catchy tune after another.
By the way, Olivia Rodrigo performed her very first real live show in Las Vegas in September 2021. Needless to say, the fans were able to sing along to every single line of the lyrics. It will certainly be like that at every future concert of the pop princess. Because it's just so much fun to sing along to such great numbers like "Good 4 You", "Traitor" or "Jealously, Jealousy"!
