Allie X: Between pop mysticism and artistic independence

09/02/2025 written by Christoph Soltmannowski

Her appearances are a ritual between performance art and pop excess: Allie X combines avant-garde pop with an unconventional aesthetic. Her artistic figure balances between cool distance and theatrical depth, accompanied by a loyal fan base. The Canadian musician will be performing at the Plaza in Zurich on July 20, 2025.

Alexandra Ashley Hughes, aka Allie X, started out as a songwriter in Los Angeles after graduating from the Musical Theater School in Ontario. "I never wanted to be just the anonymous hit machine," she emphasizes. With singles such as "Catch" (2014), she developed an unmistakable style: electronic sounds, complex melodies and surrealist visuals.

Art figure between glamor and enigma

Allie X creates entire worlds - her X symbolizes "the freedom to constantly reinvent myself". She presents her album Girl With No Face (2024) as a "reconquest of my artistic DNA", combined with a tour full of new wave beats, projections and robotic movements.

Influences & sound

Her music fuses synthpop with artpop, inspired by icons such as Depeche Mode and Cocteau Twins. "These albums feel like they come from a parallel world - I wanted to capture that," she explains. Tracks like "Bon Voyage" celebrate radical change, while her voice oscillates between fragile and mechanical.

Mainstream vs. indie

Despite collaborations with stars such as Troye Sivan and BTS, Allie X remains a cult figure. "My bills are paid, I'm creatively fulfilled - that's enough," she says. She inspires her queer community in intimate venues: "My shows are about the courage to be different". Behind the mask of the pop phantom shimmers fragility: "Life is painful. And beautiful. I haven't quite figured out how to deal with it yet." But it is precisely this mystery that makes her so appealing - unpredictable, sophisticated, irresistible.
