Future Islands have been one of the most independent bands in modern indie pop for years. The trio from Baltimore combines warm synthesizers with melancholy lyrics and intense vocal moments. Today, on May 22, the next studio album «From a Hole in the Floor to a Fountain of Youth» will be released. It will take the band on tour through various cities in North Carolina. There are currently no concerts planned in Switzerland.
Since their formation in 2006, Future Islands have consistently pursued their own style. The album «Singles» made the band internationally famous. «Seasons (Waiting on You)» in particular became a defining song of the indie decade. Nevertheless, Future Islands never sounded like a typical retro band. Although their music incorporates elements of new wave and synth-pop, it rarely feels nostalgic.
Singer Samuel T. Herring plays a large part in this. His voice moves effortlessly between calm vocals, spoken passages and rough outbursts. It is precisely this alternation that lends many songs an unusual tension.
Future Islands continue their musical approach with «From a Hole in the Floor to a Fountain of Youth». Released songs such as «Sail», «Haunted By You» and «The Fountain» point to an album that once again oscillates between hope, loss and personal change. At the same time, the band remains true to its flair for catchy melodies.
Once again, there are no radical changes of style in the foreground. Rather, Future Islands seem like a band that continues to refine its sound. This is precisely where their strength lies. The songs often only unfold their effect after several runs through and live from small details in production and arrangement. You can listen to the entire new album today, May 22nd.
There are currently no concert dates confirmed for Switzerland. However, international shows have already been announced. So far, the tour will take the band to various cities in North Carolina. Whether Future Islands will later extend their concert tour to Europe and possibly Switzerland remains to be seen.
