The British pop star releases his fourth solo album. Anyone expecting a revolution will get something better: an album that warms like the first ray of sunshine after a night of dancing.
When someone listens to his album «Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.» can you not like this person and their music unless you are a heavy fan of death metal or gabber? The answer is simple: no. And that's how it is with Harry Styles' new album. Four years after the Grammy-winning «Harry's House», the former One Direction star is back.
Styles apparently spent last summer in Berlin clubs, dancing in Berghain and being inspired by the techno culture. You can hear that. The first single «Aperture» is five minutes of disco ecstasy with driving synthesizers. You can hear Phoenix, Daft Punk, Robbie Williams. There's funk, there are choirs. Produced by Fred Again and Kid Harpoon. Twelve songs, just under 44 minutes.
The album doesn't reinvent anything, but it does something better: it reminds us of what pop music can do when it's not overly cerebral. «We belong together» sings Styles in «Aperture». A simple message that does a lot of good right now.
The tour for the album takes Styles to Amsterdam ten times, to London's Wembley Stadium twelve times and to Madison Square Garden in New York 30 times. Switzerland? Not a chance. But a detour would be possible. Hey, Harry: You can go jogging here and we have really cool clubs. Why don't you come to Switzerland again? We'll show you everything too!
