Sens Unik are among the most influential names in Swiss hip-hop. The Lausanne-based group looks back on more than three decades of rap history and is back on stage together.
Sens Unik formed in the late 1980s in the Lausanne and Renens area, an early hub of Swiss hip-hop culture. The group’s core lineup includes rapper Carlos Leal, DJ and producer Just One, singer Déborah, and drummer and percussionist Laurent «Bio» Biollay. Rade and Osez were also part of the group’s history. At a time when rap in Switzerland was still very much an underground scene, Sens Unik developed its own approach to what was then a fledgling culture. French-speaking Switzerland was not only their place of origin but also an important part of their musical identity.
With songs like «Le VIème Sens,» «Les Portes du Temps,» and «Chromatic,» the group established itself beyond Western Switzerland in the 1990s. «Chromatic» reached number four on the Swiss album charts in 1994. Later releases included «Tribulations,» «Pole Position,» and «Abracadabra,» among others. Collaborations also played an important role. «Original,» featuring Die Fantastischen Vier, reached number 27 on the Swiss singles charts in 1997.
Sens Unik is characterized by powerful beats, French lyrics, and influences from diverse cultural contexts. In addition to French, Spanish and English also appeared in their songs. After disbanding in 2010, the group returned to the stage in 2025 and resumed their live performances in 2026.
Sens Unik will be on tour again in 2026. For anyone who missed these Swiss rap pioneers last year or would like to see them live again, there will be opportunities to do so at various venues in December 2026.
