Last week I went to the "Kinky Boots" show. There is much more to the title than meets the eye. Here are five reasons why you shouldn't miss the musical.
Kinky Boots is based on a true story and tells the story of Charlie Price, who unexpectedly has to take over his father's ailing shoe factory. When he meets the charismatic drag queen Lola, not only does a special bond develop, but also a bold business idea that could save the company from ruin. We are talking about high-quality, eye-catching high heels: especially for drag queens and anyone who wants to express their uniqueness.
The musical celebrates diversity and uses humor, heart and touching moments to show how important openness, solidarity and the courage to embrace one's own identity are. It reminds us that true strength lies in accepting yourself and allowing others to do the same.
The characters in Kinky Boots are lovingly drawn and quickly grow on the audience. Each role has its own personality, history and development. From the insecure factory boss to the radiant drag queen who embodies the courage to change. The dialog is witty, pointed and full of charm, making you laugh again and again, but also touching you. This mixture ensures that you feel the characters' emotions and allow yourself to be completely drawn into their world.
The set design hasn't changed much, but the main stage set - the shoe factory - is cool. For example, you can see the sun shining through the vents or spider webs moving in the wind. Dirt runs down the large windows realistically when it rains. The attention to detail is visible in every corner.
My vocal expertise is based solely on having sung in a choir for a while. Nevertheless, I think that the vocal performance stands out in this musical. It is incredible how precise and full of emotion the singing is.
Many of the songs - soundtracked by Cyndi Lauper - are accompanied by a dance number and the audience is immediately carried away by both. Because the numbers are powerful, colorful and full of energy. So it's not surprising that the audience enthusiastically claps along to the lyrics "We'll light you up like a live wire", for example, and/or interjects positive cheers.
