Amy Ross: The green wonder

12/11/2017 written by Michel Imhof
Amy Ross (31) is on stage in the leading role as the green witch Elphaba in "Wicked". The musical will be making a guest appearance in Zurich from Wednesday.

Amy Ross, you last starred in the musical "Kinky Boots" and are now part of "Wicked". Musicals with a clear message: tolerance. How do you experience the performances?

Amy Ross: There is nothing better for a performer than to give the audience a positive message and make them think. Both musicals convey the message that it's okay to be different and that you shouldn't hide or pretend. That's why "Wicked" and "Kinky Boots" are so popular in the LGBT scene.

This is your first time in "Wicked". When did you come into contact with the musical?

I was at college and it was being revived on Broadway, but not in London. I listened to the music while driving or studying. And I dreamed of being in it myself one day.

A dream that is now coming true. How long does it take to apply the green paint for your witch make-up?

It recently took 90 minutes for the photo shoot, but it actually takes 30 minutes. During the shoot, I first had to see how the green color would look on my skin.

What is your favorite musical?

To play myself: "Wicked". As an audience member: "Miss Saigon". The music and the story, which is based on true events, touches me.

You've been in Switzerland for almost two months with "Wicked". Have you ever been here before?

No, never before! Because there are so many beautiful places in this world, I only ever travel to a place once. That's why I'm all the more curious to see what Switzerland is like. I'm even going to celebrate Christmas with you. You celebrate it well, don't you? I'm looking forward to the Christmas markets and the atmosphere.

How do you celebrate Christmas?

My husband has rented a chalet in the mountains. We'll be celebrating there with friends and some relatives.

After Zurich, you will be touring the UK and Ireland with the production of "Wicked". Do you enjoy traveling?

Yes, I love traveling and seeing lots of places around the world. But I'm married and have a cat, so I'll miss my husband and the cat a lot. A bit more my husband, of course - I have to say that now (laughs).
