Cirque du Soleil show "Ovo": In the beginning was the egg

09/12/2016 written by Mohan Mani
With its fourteenth show "Ovo", the French-Canadian Cirque du Soleil takes us into the realm of insects. The European premiere is in Switzerland in October.

Since time immemorial, Cirque du Soleil has banned classic animal acts from its program. So it is all the more surprising that "Ovo", a show from the animal kingdom, is now coming to Switzerland. The focus may "merely" be on insects, but at least it's insects.

The name "Ovo" is Portuguese and means egg. One of these can be seen in the ring at the beginning and symbolizes the origin of all life. It goes without saying that the round thing quickly arouses the interest of heaps of originally created insects. There is the cheeky ladybug, the high-flying cricket, the silly ants and much more that creeps and flies.

Brazilian soundtrack

Since its premiere in Montreal in 2009, "Ovo" has delighted many Cirque fans around the world. The production is based on an idea by Brazilian choreographer Deborah Colker. For once, it is not the dance or the plot that is important to her, but rather the movement itself. The soundtrack is also unmistakably inspired by Brazilian culture.

A whimsical kaleidoscope

Although the Cirque du Soleil company has been on the road more successfully since it was founded by the former street artist Guy Laliberté in 1984, the advertising promises "a fast-paced, colorful and bizarre kaleidoscope of outstanding artistic perfection". Indeed, the first visual impressions of the show and character motifs show that the form and content of "Ovo" differ significantly from previous Cirque productions.
