Two giant hands open the curtain right at the beginning, onto which the title of the latest Mummenschanz program "you and me" is projected onto a screen. It is clear from the outset that, in addition to traditional success factors, Floriana Frassetto (65) and her four up-and-coming artists have developed further and adapted their still unique performance art to modern times in the best possible way.
Silently in the world of mummies
The show continues with a frog and its appetite for a fly, then the journey leads to seahorses and kissing swans. Meanwhile, the audience sits quiet as mice in the auditorium. The enthusiasm of young and old is huge. No clearing of throats, no whispering, just pure excitement, games and fun. There is laughter, smiles and applause. It's bad luck if you haven't switched your cell phone to silent or have to cough. Since there is absolute silence in the theater, you can hear every cell phone vibration. Switching to flight mode is an advantage.
Cell phone, chat and selfie mania
After a short break, the show continues with innovative numbers. The meeting of an arguably male viola and a more feminine violin borders on genius, although their tête-à-tête is interrupted by a metronome. The affectionate parody of their cell phone, chat and selfie mania is taken directly from the lives of today's teenagers. Combined with improvised live beats, at times you are reminded of the competition from "Stomp".
Awakening the play instinct
Despite all the innovations, "Mummenschanz" has remained true to its art form. The mix of traditional figures such as the ball-playing tubes and modern creations such as an accomplished "You and me" letter game works perfectly. Seen in this light, Mummenschanz is still one of the best that Swiss performance art has had to offer since the 1970s. An export article par excellence. Thanks to the absence of dialog, the "Mummis" awaken the play instinct not only in children, but also in adults worldwide.
