In "Cabaret" with Fabienne Louves & Co.

Thanks to a fresh production and hand-picked cast, the classic musical "Cabaret" shines in new splendor.

Michael von der Heide sings "Welcome" right at the beginning and leads the audience into the frivolous world of Berlin's Kit Kat Club in 1929. This is also where US writer Clifford Bradshaw (Kenneth Huber) ends up when he meets English nightclub singer Sally Bowles (Fabienne Louves) on New Year's Eve. Bradshaw experiences the rise of National Socialism at close quarters and soon becomes involved not only in money smuggling but also in the systematic exclusion of Jews.

Daring outfits

Despite such heavy themes, the classic musical "Cabaret" strives for the greatest possible entertainment value: there is singing and dancing, flirting, loving and sexing for all it's worth: the outfits are daring, the costumes are adapted to the nightclub milieu and the champagne flows in streams, much to the delight of the kit-kat girls, gays and gays.

But dark clouds are gathering in the supposedly endless party sky, often reminiscent of the present day. Whether it's Trump America, neo-Nazi currents or an increasingly sex and fun society, there's plenty of room for thought-provoking ideas. Ultimately, the interplay between wicked political satire, increasing intolerance and heightened fascism prevails in Dominik Flaschka's skillful production (including a human playing a sheepdog).

A look into an uncertain future

The "MusicStar" winner Fabienne Louves sings with a strong voice that has grown considerably since her casting show victory in 2007. "Cabaret" classics such as "Mein Herr" and "Money, Money" have a powerful effect. These songs already made the 1972 film version of "Cabaret" with Liza Minnelli unforgettable. In the new Swiss production, Sabine Martin as Fräulein Schneider and Helmut Vogel as Mr. Schultz, an engaged senior couple facing an uncertain future because of their Jewish ancestry, are convincing.
