James Morrison and Sarah Meier at Art on Ice 2017

The stars of Art on Ice 2017 were announced last night. James Morrison will accompany the figure skaters with his music and Sarah Meier will make a comeback after a year's break.

On February 2, 2017, Art on Ice will celebrate the grand premiere of the new edition at the Hallenstadion Zurich. After stars such as Anastacia, Donna Summer, Nelly Furtado, Zucchero and Jessie J, James Morrison (32) will be supporting the figure skaters with his music next year.

Morrison landed his first big hit 10 years ago with "You Give Me Something". From then on, it continued unabated: his song "Broken Strings" with Nelly Furtado made it to the top of the German and Swiss charts in 2008, and in 2011 his album made it to the top in Switzerland and the UK. After a four-year break, the Brit released his latest album "Higher Than Here" in 2015, in which he showed himself to be rougher and more soulful than before.

He is looking forward to the figure skaters: "The athletes impress me immensely. What they show and perform, their jumps and pirouettes and lifts: daredevil!" He is happy not to have to be on the ice himself: "I'll probably be scared for the figure skaters from time to time. So I'd rather be the singer after all..."

Sarah Meier is coming back in 2017 - thanks to James Morrison!

"After Art on Ice 2015, Sarah Meier (32) said she was done with figure skating at the highest level," writes the organizer in its media release. But she kept one option open. She said that she would definitely retire from professional ice skating, "unless James Morrison were to become the guest star of Art on Ice in the next few years". And of course, the 2011 European champion is keeping her word and will be performing in front of her home crowd again next year.

She is delighted with the 2017 guest star: "His music and his voice grabbed me straight away," she says. Meier, who retired from professional figure skating, now has to prepare herself for hard training: "I was never on the ice at all last fall and winter," she says. "I'll have to train on the ice at least three times a week again until Art on Ice in February!"

Vice world champion and Olympic champion duo on the ice rink

Next year's Art on Ice will also feature crowd favorite Florent Amodio from France and runner-up Ashley Wagner from the USA. The Russians Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov, Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot and the Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White, the current Olympic champions, make up the provisional ice skating duos.

It is not yet known who will be joining James Morrison as a musical guest at Art on Ice 2017. "All I can say today is that we will be concluding negotiations with great musicians very soon," says Oliver Höner, CEO and Artistic Director of Art on Ice.
