Mummenschanz on tour in Switzerland again

30/05/2016 written by Christoph Soltmannowski
It all began in Paris in 1972, when Bernie Schürch, Andres Bossard and Floriana Frassetto formed the theater troupe Mummenschanz, and from then on, they impressed audiences with a concept that immediately caught on: it is somehow pantomime, but without facial expressions. You never see faces in Mummenschanz, but plasticine, toilet paper and luminous objects that tell stories in a striking way. A concept with which they thrilled audiences on Broadway in New York for three years from 1977 - and were even invited to appear on the Muppet Show, which was very popular at the time.

Then it went around the globe several times, the Swiss took millions of people on their journey of fantasy, from Sydney to Santiago, from Tehran to Tel Aviv, even in Bangkok and Bologna the critics praised the speechless show with many beautiful words.

More than four decades later, the guts are still there, and anyone who has never seen Mummenschanz live will now get a chance: after many performances abroad, the troupe is finally touring Switzerland again, and even with a new program: its title "you & me" should offer room for interpretation. We are excited and are happy to be surprised.

The performers are never identifiable during the show, which is why changes in the cast are not noticeable for the time being. Of course, there have also been changes in the 44 years of the show: co-founder Andres Bossard died in 1992, the second original member Bernie Schürch left the company four years ago at the age of 68 - but Floriana Frassetto, who also lives in the Rhine Valley and is the artistic director of "you & me", is still with the company.

New people are now in place - and the continuation of the group for the next few decades is more than assured. Because the troupe can even multiply: It's no secret that for 5 years there were even two Mummenschanz troupes working in parallel: One in America, the other in Europe.

To describe Mummenschanz in more detail in words would be as inappropriate as explaining the punch line of a joke. Anyone who has seen it once will understand. So go and see it!
