Album of the week: "Endosaurusrex" by Stiller Has - like Tom Waits in dialect

24/02/2017 written by Sidonia Maurer
Endo Anaconda as a dinosaur poet: Direct, abstract and funny.

The artist and the band

Even after 25 years, the unique Endo Anaconda (61) and his lyrics have lost none of their unique strength and intensity. The Swiss singer is now bringing his fresh program to the stage with a new formation: Andi Pupato (percussion), Boris Klečić (guitars, tambura, banjo), Andreas Wyss (bass) and Roman Wyss (keyboards).

The new album

Endo Anaconda sees himself as a surviving artistic fossil. In the song "Endosaurusrex", Endo hints at autobiographical references: From his christening gown to his shroud, he searches for a dinosaur lady until the dragon he ran into leaves him because of whining. His lyrics are poetic and original: "Hey, knock the poison out of me and let me go", he says to Blondie, who wants to heal him. The lyrics are also often abstract: "I bi dy abgstürztte Ängel, dyni Schlampe". You don't know exactly whether the people in the songs are fictitious. Julishka from Budapest only takes postcards or cash, a lost love goes to Goa with the art director, and the "Härz-Ass" is worshipped but plays with the devil. With Balkan sounds and ballads, Endo sings straight from the soul. At least for those who can listen between the lines.

Recommended tracks

"Endosaurusrex": string sounds and fiery rhythms to sway and dance along to.
"So vergeht die Zeit": Witty lyrics to make you think, and the groove to a (teeny) slow dance.
"Flieder": A catchy tune with harmonious melodies to sing along to.

Verdict

Music and lyrics that inspire both dancing and reflection. Endo skillfully sings about life and the stones it puts in your way.

Live

The tour starts with the album launch on 16.3.2017 and lasts until summer 2018. Stiller Has will be playing at Moods in Zurich on 16.4.
