DJ Fritz Kalkbrenner: "Swiss festivals are super well organized"

16/01/2017 written by Michel Imhof
He is the younger brother of Paul Kalkbrenner (39), but is in no way inferior to him when it comes to DJing. Fritz Kalkbrenner (36) explained to us why his gigs are performances and not parties.

Your new album "Grand Départ" is out now. You are the singer, lyricist, composer and producer. Did you do everything on your own?
Not one hundred percent. On the first album, I really did almost everything myself. But now I have strings on the new album, background singers, among other things, and I also get help from colleagues with arrangements and the final mixing.

Does your brother Paul give you feedback on the music?
That used to be the case. Nowadays we listen to each other's new music and then realize pretty quickly what the other thinks. We're almost at a level where we can't give each other any big tips and we don't necessarily want to accept them (laughs).

You sing live while performing. Have you already made mistakes?
Of course, the classic stage mistakes. You have to cover them up.

Which clubs do you have to have been to?
The list is long. Berghain in Berlin and the Womb in Tokyo, among others. But there are also many other great clubs, the Hive in Zurich is also at a very high level.

You are in Switzerland very often. What do you like here?
The festivals are super well organized. You don't just hear that from European acts, but also from American acts. Gampel, Gurten, Frauenfeld and so on: I only hear good things about the organization everywhere.

As a Berliner, when will the new airport open?
Most probably never! Another study has just been published which says that only five percent is still unfinished, but that it would be too complicated to repair it. Local politics leaves something to be desired. As a Berliner, you can only be ashamed of that.
