Glasperlenspiel: German can be this cool

16/07/2016 written by Michel Imhof
Carolin Niemczyk and Daniel Grunenberg lead an "awesome life": as the electropop group Glasperlenspiel, they are currently riding a wave of success. They sing the "GZSZ" theme tune and open Helene Fischer's concerts. Singing German seems to be in.

The foundations for Glasperlenspiel's career were laid around five years ago: in 2011, the duo took part in the Bundesvision Song Contest initiated by Stefan Raab and came fourth. "That was an unforgettable moment," recalls Daniel Grunenberg (27), who forms the electropop duo Glasperlenspiel together with Carolin Niemczyk (25). The two have a close bond not only professionally, but also privately: they are lovers. "I see that as a big advantage," says Daniel.

It's nice to always have your sweetheart around you. "We are on the road so often and always have our confidant with us, someone you can rely on one hundred percent," he says. Marriage and children are not yet on the agenda. "We're enjoying the time. We're looking forward to the concerts this year and aren't even thinking ahead yet." They got to know each other in 2003. "From then on, we played together in a school band," says Daniel. "But later we quickly realized that we wanted to earn our money with music, so we founded Glasperlenspiel in 2010."

Glasperlenspiel, alongside bands like Mia and Frida Gold, brought the German language into electropop. "We started making music early on. Back then, German was simply the language we felt most comfortable with," says Daniel. But that didn't necessarily make the work any easier. "Composing lyrics in German requires finesse. In English, something is easy to sing, but in German you quickly end up with kitsch and pop songs. You have to find the ideal way," he says.

They accompanied Helene Fischer's stadium tour

Fans of the series "Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten" now get to hear Glasperlenspiel every day: They have been singing the theme tune since last year. "RTL asked us and was immediately impressed by our demo," says Daniel. He doesn't watch the series in his private life. "But Caro is a big fan!"

Another milestone in their career followed last summer: they opened the 22 concerts of Helene Fischer's "Farbenspiel" tour. "It was madness. It was the biggest stadium tour Germany has ever seen," says Daniel. "We played in front of an average of 50,000 people every night and were able to take a lot from the time." Of course, they didn't miss out on
to watch parts of Helene's concert. "What she does deserves the greatest respect!" praises Daniel.

Glasperlenspiel have been touring Germany, Austria and Switzerland since October. "We only play in front of sold-out crowds, which makes us very proud." It is important not to fall into a routine on tour. "We want to avoid routine. That's why we not only optimize our songs, but also the LEDs and visual effects." After all, the audience wants to be offered something. "People travel from far and wide to the concerts. They only deserve the very best show!" says Daniel. And he knows exactly where he sees Glasperlenspiel in ten years' time: "On stage!"
