Justice at the Montreux Jazz Festival: nothing is sacred to this electro duo

26/04/2024 written by Christoph Soltmannowski

Justice caused quite a stir back in 2007 with their cracking deconstruction of techno, pop, R&B, electro, funk, metal and weird musical ideas - now the French duo is coming to the Montreux Jazz Festival. Their new album "Hyperdrama" has just been released.

It's not that the two DJs Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay are offending anyone with their unconventional style - on the contrary: they have won a Grammy Award, a Victoire de la musique - the French music prize - and three MTV Awards. With their second album "Audio, Video, Disco", which was released in 2011, the sound boat drifted even further. A bombastic acoustic drumbeat with classic 70s rock elements reminiscent of Queen and Yes as well as Frankie Knuckles and Prince, it took them on a world tour that included headlining appearances at the mega festivals Coachella and Lollapalooza.

A Grammy for the remix album

Their third album "Woman", released in 2016, takes us on board and catapults us without transition from the bouncy R&B pop of the track "Pleasure" into the frenzy of "Alakazam!" Their remix album "Woman Worldwide" was then characterized by live music - and even earned them a Grammy for the best electro album of the year.

Into cinemas worldwide with the space opera "Iris"

But that was not all: in the style of the historic live performance of "Pink Floyd in Pompeii", the band used the energy and footage of a live show to convey the experience of a lifetime on film. "Iris" was a real space opera that was shown in almost 300 cinemas in 50 countries - but only once. Justice are always good for a surprise. What are they up to in Montreux (where they will be playing on Fri 12.7.24)? We'll see - and probably be amazed once again.
